Este escrito intenta rastrear la huella de la obra cervantina, El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, en el pensamiento del vasco. El Quijote le interesa a Unamuno ya que pone en inmediata evidencia el hecho de que todos llevamos en los embrollos de nuestra alma un poco de Don Quijote y otro tanto de su escudero Sancho Panza.
