Abstract

The purpose of these reflections is to present metaphor as a tool for social investigation. Reading "El Oficio del Sociologo" by Bourdieu and "El Giro Semiótico " by Fabbri suggests the existence of some opposite positions on the use of metaphor. Bourdieu, on one hand, support the necessity in every investigation of an appropriate epistemologic surveillance and presents the analysis of the logic of the common language, as one of the techniques that guarantee it, in order to avoid the doubtful significances to which metaphors can expose us. Fabbri on the other hand, affirms that metaphor can contribute to the extension of knowledge in the same way that the syllogistic inference does. I can notice, then, that in what Bourdieu sees a weakness Fabbri points out a possibility. I understand that the outline of Fabbri opens an interesting door that can contribute and become extensive to other areas of the scientific investigation, although its proposal concerns to the field of the semiotic. Also, I agree with Bourdieu in the need to avoid taking pre-constructed objects from the common language as data looking for their theoretical construction. That construction, however, does not prevent us from granting espistemologic status to metaphors, or, in other words, to accept them as instruments that the investigators can use according to the problems and the objectives they think about.
