No obstante, “gótico” pasó prontamente a ser un término inestable “remaining constant only in the way it functioned to establish a set of polarities revolving primarily around the concepts of the primitive and the civilized” (Punter y Byron 3).3De ese modo, durante el Renacimiento, “gótico” era utilizado para identificar la “época oscura” (“Dark Ages”) comenzando con la caída del Imperio Romano e incluyendo toda la Edad Media (Punter y Byron 3): “This equation of the Gothic with a barbaric medieval past served not only to establish through difference the superiority of the more classical traditions of Greece and Rome, but also to confirm the virtues of the equally civilized, ordered and rational present” (Punter y Byron 4).es
