Item Caminos hacia Gambartes(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2003-10) Fantoni, GuillermoComo un relámpago Leónidas Gambartes, al igual que Juan Grela, Anselmo Píccoli, Domingo Garrone o Ricardo Sívori, por citar sólo algunos de sus compañeros, se formó esencialmente en la Mutualidad Popular de Estudiantes y Artistas Plásticos junto a Antonio Berni, un joven maestro dotado de una vasta experiencia adquirida en Europa. Como recordó Berni años más tarde, la nueva agrupación, creada en 1934, desarrolló “actividades culturales que tenían un sentido de lucha y esclarecimiento” y sus miembros compensaban su falta de experiencia “en el orden artístico” con su madurez en el plano “ideológico y político”.Item Confluencias de la lírica y las artes visuales en Rosario hacia 1904(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2008) Fantoni, GuillermoLas reflexiones de la generación del ‘80 en Buenos Aires acerca de un proyecto de “nación civilizada” incluyeron necesariamente el desarrollo de las Bellas Artes, que se encontraba en desigualdad de condiciones respecto al prestigio y consolidación de los campos literario y musical, especialmente la ópera. 4 Las artes visuales debían acompañar activamente el proceso de cambio político y social, “como un medio transmisor de ideas, valores y ejemplos tan poderosos como la palabra escrita”Item Laura Malosetti Costa: Estilo y política en Martín Malharro(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2008) Fantoni, GuillermoHace unos años, en un encuentro de la sociedad Word & Image, mostré algunos paisajes de Martín Malharro a propósito de una reflexión sobre el peso del ejemplo de François Millet en las ideas y polémicas sobre el arte moderno que circularon en los años finales del siglo XIX en Buenos Aires. Señalé entonces, naturalmente, que Malharro es considerado el primer pintor impresionista del arte argentino. En ese momento Dario Gamboni, especialista en el arte europeo de los últimos años del siglo y en particular gran conocedor de la pintura simbolista, llamó mi atención sobre el estilo de las obras que había mostrado: le parecía curiosa esa caracterización de Malharro como impresionista pues –al menos las pocas obras que había podido ver– le resultaban notablemente cercanas a las búsquedas expresivas de los artistas que en ese fin de siglo se enrolaban en la maraña de grupos simbolistas, idealistas, decadentes o ioncoherentes que, aun cuando utilizaron el divisionismo y una paleta luminosa como un insumo común, ensayaban aproximaciones a la naturaleza de carácter vitalista, cargadas de expresividad en el dibujo y en el manejo de los colores.Item Mary Tapia: una moda argentina en el clima internacional de la avanzada folk(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2009-10) Fantoni, Guillermona de las tendencias más visibles en la moda de la década del 60 fue el denominado “look espacial”, un estilo que respondía a la fe que la sociedad occidental depositaba en el progreso ilimitado de la tecnología, expresada por una estética futurista expandida a diversas esferas. En la plástica, las propuestas ligadas al arte óptico y cinético y la utilización de los massmedia se articularon con una orientación en el campo del diseño que exaltaba elementos como el plástico, el metal y el vinilo. La moda no fue ajena al fenómeno y esos materiales, hasta el momento alternativos, comenzaron a ser usuales en la indumentaria Couture Future. André Courrèges, Pierre Cardin y Paco Rabanne conformaron la tríada que mejor representó esta variante, destacándose por sus diseños de líneas puras donde se utilizaba el blanco y el plateado como colores casi excluyentes y los materiales antes mencionados. En 1965, Andy Warhol declaró en la revista Vogue: “Todos deberían tener el mismo aspecto” e ir “vestidos de color plateado. El color plateado no se parece a nada. Se fusiona con todo.”1 Un año después, la misma publicación reafirmaba esta propuesta al comentar una prenda de Paco Rabanne, exaltado como un diseñador “abiertamente no convencional“ a partir de su creación de “un abrigo cometa «cinético, de cristal esmaltado», que captó la obsesión de los 60 por el plástico.”2 Este clima, signado por la denominada “carrera espacial”, se hacía eco de las tensiones existentes entre las dos grandes potencias mundiales con el fin de conquistar el espacio, que tuvieron como corolario la llegada del hombre a la luna en 1969. Las fotografías de la época mostraban mujeres vestidas con un estilo futurista, usando sombreros que se asemejaban notablemente a los cascos espaciales utilizados por los astronautas. André Courrèges quizás sea el diseñador que mejor ilustre el estilo “Space Age” a partir de su emblemática colección The moon girl de 1964. 3 Fascinado por los viajes espaciales realizó “pantalones plateados, botas lunares, gafas de sol de plástico blanco –con ranuras en formas de pestañas–. La imagen Courrèges era limpia, aerodinámica y siempre miraba al futuro.Item El alba con la noche(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2009-10) Fantoni, GuillermoEn 1915 el historiador Ernesto Quesada describió la sala dedicada a la Guerra del Paraguay en el Museo Histórico Nacional de Buenos Aires: “… en el centro de la pared que da a la calle Defensa, está el retrato del general Mitre, que mandó en jefe a los ejércitos aliados y, en una vitrina al pie, los objetos que fueron del mariscal López: uniformes, parte de su vajilla, artículos de uso personal, ropa interior, sellos y -pieza no menos curiosa- el molde de corona que se tomó en su equipaje; además, fusiles, quepís, cornetas y clarines paraguayos”Item Un sortilegio guaraní(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2009-10) Fantoni, GuillermoEn junio de 1920 La Revista de “El Círculo” de Rosario, en la sección denominada Información Mundial de Arte firmada por Leonardo Marini, reseñaba una exposición de pinturas de Alfredo González Garaño destinadas a un ballet guaraní titulado Caaporá, que había comenzado en la primer quincena de ese mes en el Salón Vilches de Madrid. Marini valoraba desde esa página, siguiendo las repercusiones españolas de la muestra, el estudio realizado sobre las costumbres y creencias de los pueblos guaraníes así como los resultados estéticos obtenidos por el joven pintor, volcados en esta oportunidad a la ilustración escenográfica de un poema de Ricardo Güiraldes musicalizado por Pascual de Rogatis y basado en una leyenda de los guaraníes: un trabajo “tan personal como nuevo y hecho a conciencia”, escribía. Además relataba el impacto que la exposición había tenido en la prensa madrileña: un verdadero éxito fundado en la presentación de “elementos decorativos realmente raros, y pudiera decirse únicos, cuyo conjunto es de una gran visualidad”, para finalmente detenerse en la crítica escrita por Rafael Domenech y publicada en el ABC de Madrid. Domenech situaba los estudios escenográficos de González Garaño en el marco del “movimiento reformador de la escenografía moderna” citando los resultados admirables de “Gordon Craig, Appia, Erler, Jeno Kemendy y Mariano Fortuny (hijo), como las bellísimas decoraciones y trajes de Beniot, Bachs (sic) o Egorof” pero resaltando la capacidad de González Garaño de interpretar bien a los maestros sin sufrir “su influencia fascinadora hasta el extremo de perder la propia personalidad”. El texto destaca el admirable estudio arqueológico realizado al reconstruir los “trajes, tatuajes y escenas de la vida íntima, guerrera y religiosa” aunque fecundado por “un temperamento artístico”: para el crítico sólo cuando estos trabajos son realizados por un artista de verdad, producen una emoción “que relega a un lugar secundario toda apreciación y juicio intelectual sobre los valores arqueológicos”, y es esa experiencia la que hace merecedora a la obra de González Garaño del análisis detenido en una revista profesional de arte.Item Entre los mástiles del puerto y la luz del libro: los linóleos de José Marín Torrejón(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2010-10) Fantoni, Guillermoosé Marín Torrejón realizó su primera exposición individual en 1939, de manera bastante tardía si consideramos la intensa participación desplegada en exhibiciones colectivas y la madurez alcanzada por su obra. Según se destacaba en artículos periodísticos que anticipaban el evento, era además la primera muestra de carácter individual que se realizaba en un barrio de la ciudad. Hasta ese momento tampoco resultaba usual que se desarrollaran presentaciones colectivas más allá del radio céntrico y su habitual circuito de difusión. Precisamente, fue la Agrupación de Artistas Plásticos Refugio la que asumió esa importante iniciativa: a través de la organización de salones de “extramuros”, llevaba la producción de sus asociados a espacios más distantes, convocando a un nuevo público de vecinos, familias y obreros. Marín Torrejón era miembro del grupo y uno de los promotores más comprometidos con estos emprendimientos. El año anterior había formado parte de la Tercera Exposición de Barrio, realizada en el mismo ámbito que ahora recibía su propia muestra: la Biblioteca Popular e Infantil Mitre. Esta entidad se hallaba ubicada en una zona por entonces periférica, la sección Sexta, donde el artista residía. Motivado por aquella experiencia grupal desplegada en su barrio, pocos meses después presentó el ambicioso proyecto de un Ciclo Artístico Científico y Cultural para dirigir en esa biblioteca. 1 Incluía todo tipo de actividades plásticas y literarias, conferencias sobre temas estéticos, científicos y sociales, concursos, torneos de ajedrez, conciertos y espectáculos desarrollados en las salas o en su entorno. Desde estas actividades se proponía una oferta cultural variada y que al mismo tiempo resultara atractiva para convocar a un público más amplio que el habitual lector. La entidad se abría a su comunidad trascendiendo la tradicional función restringida al préstamo de los libros –que como señalaba el artista, muchas veces reposaban encerrados en sus estantes– y se transformaba, según expresaba en uno de sus escritos, en una “una avanzada de cultura viviente, despierta, dinámica, presente y augural”Item Impresiones sociales. Una lectura sobre la tradición del grabado en la Argentina(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2010-10) Fantoni, GuillermoEn 1963, los artistas agrupados en la Mesa de grabadores aludían a la contemporánea transformación del “contenido popular” del grabado “para entroncarse decididamente en las corrientes estéticas que inquietan a las nuevas generaciones; deja de ser documental para dar cauce a la imagen personal del artista; no deja de ser punzante, irónico y combativo como en otras épocas, sino que simplemente enriquece su forma, usa un lenguaje contemporáneo e incorpora además a su quehacer una nueva militancia: la estética”. 2 En esos mismos tiempos, Alberto Nicasio sostenía que “el grabado contemporáneo se divide en dos grupos antagónicos: los figurativos que siguen la línea tradicional y popular, y los abstractos a quienes solo preocupan los puros valores estéticos”. 3 Estas lecturas eran sostenidas en un momento de clara renovación del grabado, cuando se incorporaban nuevos soportes, procedimientos y materiales4 a la vez que eran exploradas nuevas posibilidades en términos de lenguaje visual como, por ejemplo, la realización de imágenes abstractasItem Lucio Fontana en Argentina: relecturas(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2010-10) Fantoni, GuillermoLa figura de Lucio Fontana (Rosario, 1899 – Varese, 1968) constituye un caso relevante dentro del arte moderno, aún más allá de Argentina e Italia, países en los que residió y desarrolló una obra profusa. Su nombre es reconocido principalmente en función de las series desplegadas en Milán a partir de la segunda posguerra, con la expansión del informalismo y la emergencia del arte conceptual. Estas obras, dominadas por la gestualidad, las búsquedas espaciales y los nuevos materiales, recorrieron el mundo. La sola mención de términos italianos como concetto spaziale, buchi, tagli remiten a la producción del artista nacido en Rosario.Item Imágenes modernistas en Rosario en los inicios del siglo XX: vitrales, mayólicas y pinturas murales(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2011-10)La consolidación internacional del estilo modernista a partir de la Exposición Universal de Paris de 1900, tuvo su correlato local en numerosas imágenes producidas por los primeros maestros europeos que arribaron a la ciudad de Rosario a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Estas obras de carácter decorativo y emplazadas en diversos soportes ponen de manifiesto nuevos aspectos del linaje artístico de los “pioneros” del arte local; en su análisis se revelan nuevamente las técnicas y procedimientos estéticos y compositivos que no sólo dan cuenta de su modo de producción sino también del alto grado de modernidad que revistió a sus obras tantas veces estigmatizadas erróneamente de “academicistas”. Las representaciones gráciles y dinámicas que son objeto de este estudio, en su mayoría figuras femeninas, deben sus rasgos temáticos al universo simbolista aunque sus características estéticas tienen un claro anclaje modernista y no pueden ser escindidas en su análisis del espacio arquitectónico al cual fueron destinadas.Item Mujer/artista: trayectorias y representaciones en la Argentina de comienzos del siglo XX(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2011-10)El mito del artista como genio creador, estrechamente asociado al vigor, la fuerza y la maestría masculinas fue un tópico pregnante en la Europa de los siglos XVIII y XIX. Imágenes de bohemios, visionarios y dandies corporizaron frecuentemente a estos personajes como outsiders ajenos a las preocupaciones de la vida cotidiana y dispuestos a desafiar las convenciones. Las mujeres tuvieron poco sitio como protagonistas de este mito, aunque fueron funcionales a él, como contraparte del genio en sus roles de musa/femme fatale. 1 Frente a la percepción compartida que sostenía la incapacidad femenina como sujeto creador, aquellas mujeres que se dedicaron entonces a la práctica del arte debieron posicionarse y negociar –cuidadosa y conscientemente– los modos de definirse y representar su estatuto de artistas. 2 Y particularmente en sus autorretratos, buscaron reconciliar el conflicto entre lo que la sociedad esperaba de las mujeres y aquello que se suponía debía ser un artista, dos identidades que parecían irreconciliables y sobre las que se proyectaban expectativas diametralmente opuestas.Item Fragmentos para una historia del paisaje en Córdoba(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2011-10)El paisaje es una imagen que identifica el arte y la cultura de Córdoba. Elegido como tema principal en la pintura, y valorado como patrimonio por sus condiciones naturales, el paisaje cordobés no sólo alcanza, entre 1920 y 1950, 1 un lugar dominante dentro de la tradición artística local, 2 sino también dentro de un proyecto de desarrollo económico regional. 3 Sin embargo, ya a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, es posible afirmar que el paisaje adquiere su condición de símbolo de Córdoba, permitiendo, en términos de Mauss, pensar en una cosa y comprenderla bajo la forma de otras. En este caso, el paisaje como símbolo nos remite al proceso de modernización de la ciudad y de la provincia, y a la experiencia moderna en la vida social y cultural local.Item El delirio permanente(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2012-10) Fantoni, GuillermoCuando se hace referencia a la resistencia cultural durante la última dictadura argentina, las manifestaciones que se suelen considerar son escasas y tardías (insistentemente, aparecen mencionados los recitales masivos de rock y Teatro Abierto, que comienza a mediados de 1981). En los relatos circulantes, muchas y variadas producciones quedan desdibujadas o francamente olvidadas, a pesar de que su consideración ayudaría a complejizar y revisar la noción misma de “resistencia a la dictadura” como un bloque monolítico y compacto. Se trata de experiencias que –entre otras consideraciones– permiten vislumbrar divergentes concepciones del arte y de la política, postulan otros modos de comunidad imaginables en medio del terror cotidiano, y ayudan a considerar variaciones, matices y etapas al interior del régimen de facto, en su impacto sobre la vida cotidiana y las prácticas culturales y artísticas. Este texto refiere, justamente, a uno de esos tantos capítulos pendientes: da cuenta de algunos avances e hipótesis en una investigación en curso1 sobre un muy poco estudiado colectivo de artistas, el Taller de Investigaciones Teatrales (TiT), surgido en Buenos Aires entre 1977-1982. Se consideran aquí sus vínculos con el grupo rosarino Cucaño (1979-1983) y sus proyecciones internacionales –o mejor dicho internacionalistas– en relación a Viajou Sem Passaporte (VSP) y otros núcleos de activismo artístico de la ciudad brasileña de São Paulo. Todos estos colectivos coordinaron un ambicioso (incluso desmedido) relanzamiento del Movimiento Surrealista Internacional (MSI) en 1981.Item Grupo de Arte Experimental Cucaño: intervenir la trama urbana, transgredir las prácticas artístico-políticas(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2012-10) Fantoni, GuillermoEl Grupo de Arte Experimental Cucaño desarrolló sus prácticas artísticas entre 1979 y 1984 en la ciudad de Rosario. Estaba integrado por jóvenes quienes, en medio del terror y de la clausura del espacio público signados por la última dictadura militar, participaron en convocatorias públicas, realizaron hechos artísticos y publicaron precarios volantes y fanzines. 1 Desde 1981 autogestionaron una Casona en la zona céntrica de Rosario que cobijó talleres2, peñas cinematográficas, cursos, charlas y ofició de sede de la agrupación de revistas independientes de Rosario (APPAR).Item La estrategia de la Cucaracha: características del grupo de Arte Experimental Cucaño**(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2012-10) Fantoni, GuillermoLa actividad del grupo Cucaño puede entenderse como una militancia cuyo objetivo político era cuestionar situaciones de la vida social del país bajo la represión del proceso militar inaugurado en 1976. Algunos de sus integrantes estaban organizados desde la agrupación de izquierda trotskista denominada “Partido Socialista de los Trabajadores” la que, tras salir de la clandestinidad primero como “Confederación Socialista” y luego como “Movimiento al Socialismo”, encuentra a la mayoría de los integrantes del colectivo participando orgánicamente. Es así como desarrollan una práctica artística de resistencia, incorporando desde sus inicios, lógica y casi involuntariamente, características propias de la singular atmósfera en que fue gestado. Estructuralmente, reproduce en su seno una serie de rangos, tareas y procedimientos tomados directamente de la política partidaria, entre los que se destacan la división en jerarquías, los textos de circulación interna, las reuniones de dirección o asambleas, la tarea militante de sumar integrantes al movimiento, los documentos, las publicaciones y hasta el uso de pseudónimos. La identificación con la ideología de izquierda imprime al grupo un fuerte dogmatismo y lo dota de una jerga característica que se ve multiplicada por el contacto con el imaginario revolucionario surrealista. A su vez, mientras profesan la experimentación y la libertad en el terreno artístico, Cucaño articula en torno al comportamiento de sus integrantes una actitud entre moralista, persecutoria y represiva deudora del régimen imperante. Todos estos elementos, sumados al vocabulario de los miembros del grupo que hablan de Cucaño apelando a la terminología propia de la militancia, hacen prácticamente imposible separar la cuestión política de los otros aspectos que le concernían.Item El río, el barrio y el paisaje: grabados de Ricardo Warecki y Santiago Minturn Zerva hacia los años cuarenta(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2013-12) Fantoni, GuillermoHacia mediados de los años cuarenta Ricardo Warecki (1911- 1992) y Santiago Minturn Zerva (1895-1964) realizaron un conjunto de pequeños grabados para el libro de cuentosLa barranca y el río del escritor Abel Rodríguez.1 Dicho volumen había sido editado en 1944 por el Círculo de Prensa de Rosario, institución inaugurada a fines del siglo XIX que congregaba a periodistas locales. Warecki, artista autodidacta y periodista de profesión, se desempeñó como miembro de este organismo durante varias décadas realizando una profusa labor gráfica. Sus obras modernas y sus temáticas locales se inspiraron en los nuevos realismos vinculados a lo que en Francia, Jean Cocteau denominó “vuelta al orden”.2 En tanto Minturn Zerva, también autodidacta, fue un grabador y pintor paisajista que había adquirido un alto reconocimiento por su empleo de una técnica limpia de líneas simples “centrada en las calles del barrio, el paisaje de la chacra, las noches en el campo”.3 La elevada calidad de sus estampas como sus filiaciones anarquistas y el hecho de que varios años antes Warecki ilustrara los textos del escritor difundidos en el diarioLa Capital, fueron sobradas condiciones para la elección de estos artistas en la confección del libro. Por otro lado, Abel Rodríguez se había distinguido por su desempeño como corresponsal en el periódico rosarino durante más de tres décadas, siendo ponderado por su participación desde 1926 en el Grupo de Boedo, donde desarrolló una literatura vinculada al mundo del trabajo a partir de su propia experiencia como obrero de la construcción.4 Por aquellos años entre Warecki y el intelectual había florecido una relación de camaradería que excedía los estrictos vínculos profesionales en el ámbito del diario. Los emprendimientos editoriales de R. E. Montes i Bradley como elBoletín de Cultura Intelectual o la revistaParaná acentuaron aún más los lazos que unían a estos portentosos creadores. Ello en un momento donde el escritor anarquista era reconocido por su labor en la filial rosarina de la Sociedad Argentina de Escritores junto a otras figuras como Rosa Wernicke y José Peire.Item Multiplicación de imágenes y cultura visual. Bacle y el arribo de la litografía a Buenos Aires (1828-1838)(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2013-12) Fantoni, GuillermoEn el año 1828 se instaló en Buenos Aires el primer establecimiento comercial que implementó en forma sostenida la tecnología litográfica como método de producción de documentos e imágenes. Este hecho introdujo una práctica novedosa en la cultura visual porteña. Durante el lapso de casi diez años en los cuales operó, la firma “Bacle y Cía.” –denominada desde 1829 “Litografía del Estado”– produjo y puso en circulación una considerable cantidad de objetos gráficos de diverso carácter. En el soporte de libros, folletos o láminas diseminó retratos de hombres públicos, vistas, álbumes ilustrados de trajes y costumbres, imágenes estampadas en hojas sueltas, papeles de música, libros con portadas o ilustraciones litografiadas, documentos oficiales o particulares como patentes, títulos de propiedad, invitaciones, letras de cambio, programas de teatro, planos topográficos, mapas y diagramas. Publicó asimismo los primeros periódicos ilustrados locales y posibilitó el emplazamiento de imágenes y elementos decorativos en todo tipo de trabajos comerciales. Pero además desarrolló gran parte de la propaganda política del régimen rosista produciendo a través de la impresión litográfica divisas federales así como el retrato de Juan Manuel de Rosas multiplicado en fundas de sombreros, guantes o chalecosItem Poéticas oblicuas. Grabado, cuerpos y poesía enDiagonal Cero(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2013-12) Fantoni, Guillermo“Me abrumas con toda tu tarea, Mimbre se mueve, parecería que estuviera soportando un huracán, hermoso todo eso”.1 A comienzos de 1967 Edgardo Antonio Vigo le escribía a su amigo Guillermo Deisler, alegrado por la intensidad del proyecto editorial que éste llevaba a cabo desde la ciudad de Antofagasta, en Chile. Bajo el sello Mimbre, fundado en Santiago en 1963, Deisler venía publicando una serie de ediciones artesanales ilustradas con grabados xilográficos, libros y carpetas de cuento y poesía de escritores jóvenes (muchos de ellos inéditos), además de varios textos de su autoría. En los años siguientes y hasta 1973, cuando tras el golpe de estado en Chile Deisler se ve obligado a exiliarse, Mimbre extenderá su apuesta editorial a la publicación de poesía experimental y libros de artista.Item Imágenes de la vida en la ciudad. Las portadas de Julio Vanzo paraMonos y Monadas de Rosario(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2013-12) Fantoni, GuillermoDurante la primera mitad del siglo XX y en consonancia con muchos otros conglomerados urbanos del mundo occidental, Rosario sufrió un acelerado proceso de modernización que repercutió en todos los aspectos de la vida de sus habitantes. El nuevo paisaje de la ciudad en permanente movimiento fue alternativamente celebrado o denunciado por artistas e intelectuales que por distintas vías intentaron asir una realidad en gran medida desconcertante. Estas respuestas encontraron su inmediato reflejo en las revistas que fueron emergiendo, captando de un modo vívido los principales debates y preocupaciones de cada época. En este sentido, estos textos colectivos constituirían documentos privilegiados para la historia de la cultura.Item Los libros de un pintor: Juan Grela y la búsqueda de una expresión americana(Escuela de Bellas Artes, 2014-12) Fantoni, GuillermoPara quien hizo un esfuerzo denodado y solitario por conocer y ejercitarse en los dominios del arte, para quien tuvo breves –aunque potentes y definitorias– experiencias con maestros, para quien no viajó a los centros internacionales de la producción artística, como es el caso de Juan Grela, los libros constituyeron la fuente insustituible para el logro de competencias culturales y disciplinarias. 1 La lectura fue entonces, una herramienta de autoformación practicada con la concentración y la disciplina que se imponía un autodidacta, y como tal, Grela la practicó de un modo intenso, 2 subordinando incluso el mero deleite a esa férrea voluntad de formación. En tanto pintor-lector con vocación de estudio, otorgó una atención de rango equivalente a la escritura y a las imágenes impresas que acompañaban los libros, a las teorías y la historia del arte tanto como a las obras reproducidas, reflexionando sobre los dos registros y adquiriendo una imponderable cultura visual. En muchos casos, hizo de las páginas de los libros el soporte de breves afirmaciones o de convicciones enfatizadas con letras grandes y signos de admiración, también de dilemas y caminos por transitar; en otros, el estudio minucioso de las ilustraciones debió primar sobre el análisis del texto –sólo si nos atenemos a la ausencia de marcaciones– de modo que los indicios de esa mirada sólo los contiene su obra.
